- Brief Description:
- 'Whalers Isabella and Comet in the Arctic' by an unknown artist, about 1850. Arctic shipping scene of the three quarter stern view of the whaler Isabella and a three quarter bows view of the Comet to the right, both in full sail with Merchant Navy ensigns and blue and white name pennants. The Isabella with white whale boats fixed around the stern deck sides and across the end, while to boats with crew are rowing to the ice shelf on the left, the front larger with Merchant Navy flag towing the smaller boat behind. The Comet has a figurehead and name at the bows and two whale boats sailing on the right towards a harpooned whale spouting blood, with gulls around it and a polar bear killing a seal on the ice in front. More whaling ships and icebergs in the distance. Composition derived from J Ward's 'Whalers in the Arctic'.
