Brief Description:
Certificate issued to Thomas Stokell on 8th March 1815 guaranteeing his exemption from impressment into the Royal Navy by a press gang. It was issued at the Port of Hull and states that Thomas Stokell, a Hull seaman aged 19 years, 'has been employed three voyages in the Greenland and Davis's Straits Trade, and is now entered as a Boatsteerer for the ship Three Brothers of Hull whereof Josiah Madison is master, and is to be employed in that ship, in the said Fishery, the next ensuing season'. It continues 'the said Thomas Stokell on producing this Certificate, is not to be impressed for or out of any coaster or collier, nor from the said ship Three Brothers from the date hereof to the voyage being ended'. A printed line at the bottom reads 'Protection for the Harpooners, Boat-steerers, Line Mangers, &c. belonging to Greenland Ships'.
