Brief Description:
Plain brown leather covered book with the spine label inscription, ‘Lyon Manby’s Voyages’. The title page inscription reads, 'A Brief Narrative of an Unsuccessful Attempt to reach Repulse Bay, through Sir Thomas Rowe’s “Welcome” in His Majesty’s Ship Griper in the Year MDCCCXXIV by Captain G.F. Lyon, R.N.’ Opposite the title page is an engraved chart of Hudson’s strait & Sir Thomas Rowe’s Welcome. The inside of the front cover has the paper label with the printed name, ‘John Suddaby, Hull’. This paper label has been stuck over a handwritten name and address. Inside there are engraved images of whales, fields of ice and other scenes. Also within the book is another section titled, ‘Journal to Voyage to Greenland, in the year 1821 with graphic illustrations’ by George William Manby Esq. There are no handwritten annotations within the book. Throughout the book there are a few circular stamps with the design, 'The Wilberforce Museum' stamped on pages. This is a book that belonged to William Wilberforce or the family and was part of the family library. It was published by John Murray, Albermarle-Street, London.
