- Brief Description:
- Print of an engraving depicting whaling in the Arctic, with men in four small boats surrounding the tail of a diving whale. Originally part of a Dutch set of twelve made by Adolf Van der Laan after drawings by Sieuwert van der Meulen, and published in about 1720, the original had a caption in Dutch, German and English that reads 'They stand Ready to stick ye whale upon her head her tail being upwards'. This version was 'printed for' Carington Bowles, 'Map & Printseller', No. 69 in St. Pauls Church Yard, London, who is recorded at that address between 1766 and 1793. The print has been trimmed to the margin and mounted on card.
