- Brief Description:
- Sutton Drain looking east from Cleveland Street Bridge, Hull, by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), about 1890. Shows a river scene with mills and warehouse buidlings on each bank, reflected in water. A tree stands on the left with three men fishing from thebank in the left foreground. Fences run down the steep banks from the rear of buildings on both sides of the drain. The building on the left, behind the tree, was the premises of Edward Stewart Annison, coach builder. Sutton Drain was one of the large open agricultural drains which flowed through the town to join the River Hull. The flat land surrounding Hull required surface water drainage, but in the 19th century these drains little more than open sewers. Watercolour, ink and wash on paper, mounted on card. Signed bottom right.
