- 'Old Newland Toll-Bar; A Relic of Hull' drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), about 1900. Print of a black and white sketch, depicting the octagonal toll bar buildingg at the centre. There is a road in the foreground along which two figures are walking and across which there is fencing with a gap in the middle. The sides of the road are lined with trees behind a fencing. Mounted on card. The Beverley to Hull Road, which passed through Newland was turnpiked by an act of 1744, with a toll bar established at Newland, at a place called Newland Bridge.The turnpike was renewed in 1764 and ran until it was discontinued in 1871.
