- Brief Description:
- Drawing of Queen Street looking north by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), 1888. Queen Street was named after Charlotte, the wife of George III. The road ran from the southern end of the Market Place to Nelson Street. It replaced an earlier street known as the Butchery, where the meat market was held. The tower of Holy Trinity can be seen in the distance. The Pilot Office stands in the left foreground, built 1819-1820 of brick and stone. Next to this stands the Bwelle Vue Hoel. Further down the street on the left at the junction of Wellington Street stands the Royal Hotel. At the other side of Wellington Street stands the premises of Edmund P Dixon & Sons, seed merchant. Tramlines run in the centre of the road, the street busy pedestrians and a horse and cart. Ink and wash on paper. Signed and dated bottom left corner.
