Brief Description:
Posterngate looking east drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925). about 1885. Posterngate, Hull, gained its name from the postern or small gate in the town wall, which stood at the end of the street. In the right foreground is the Shipping Office Hotel, landlord Henry George Fountain. The Trinity House Almshouses are opposite, with the Doric portico topped with the statue of a reclining Oceanus. The two people in the centre of the road are standing outside the Savings Bank. The tower of Holy Trinity Church can be seen in the distance to the right. Ink and wash on paper.
