- Brief Description:
- Watercolour and ink drawing of the marble statue of William Wilberforce at the Town Hall, Hull by F.S. Smith. The statue was commissioned by Henry Briggs and made by William Day Keyworth Junior. It was presented by Briggs to the Corporaiton and unveiled at the Town Hall in 1884. The full-length statue is shown in front of a decorated niche with a round-headed arch above. The inscription on the pedestal reads, 'Presented to the Corporation / Henry Briggs Esquire / Sheriff of Kingston Upon Hull 1881'. An inscription on the plinth reads 'William Wilberforce / Born in Hull 24th August 1759 / Died in London 29th July 1833 / Member of Parliament for Hull from 1784 to 1812 / England owes to him the reformation of manners / The world owes to him the abolition of slavery'. Signed by the artist at lower left edge.
