Brief Description:
Model Dwellings, drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), dated 1889. The scene shows the 'Model Dwellings', now known as Turner Court, on the corner of St. Luke's Street and Midland Street, Hull. The building was designed by the architect Henry M. Eyton for the 'Society for Improving the Dwellings of the Labouring Classes' and was built in 1862. It contained tenements, accessed from the street or from a galleried landing within the central courtyard. The flats had a water supply, and indoor toilets conected to the sewers, in contrast to most of the housing available to working-class people in Hull at the time. There are two well-dressed woman crossing Midland Street and a couple on the pavement in St. Luke's Street. Ink and wash on paper. Signed and dated bottom left corner.
