Brief Description:
Pen and ink drawing by Frederick Schultz Smith of the Model Dwellings (now known as Turner Court), on the corner of Midland Street and St. Luke's Street, Hull. The building was designed by the architect Henry M. Eyton for the 'Society for Improving the Dwellings of the Labouring Classes' and was built in 1882. It contained tenements, accessed from the street or from a galleries landing within the central courtyard. The flats had a water supply, and indoor toilets connected to the sewers, in contrast to most of the housing available to working-class people in Hull at the time. There are two well-dressed women crossing Midland Street and another, with a parasol on the pavement at the corner. A horse-drawn carriage stands in St. Luke's Street. Signed and dated by the artist at lower left corner.
