Brief Description:
Tinted lithographic print of 'Old Newland Toll-Bar' from a drawing by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), printed by Burkitt & Saunderson Lthographers, Hull, and published by J Farrell, Hull, about 1900. Mounted on hardboard and varnished/coated with vinyl(?), with four holes at corners where fixed with metal drawing pins. Scene that depicts the Newland Toll Bar, which includes an octagonal building at the centre. There is a road in the foreground along which two figures are walking and across which there is fencing with a gap in the middle. The sides of the road are lined with trees behind a fencing. The Beverley to Hull Road, which passed through Newland was turnpiked by an act of 1744, with a toll bar established at Newland, at a place called Newland Bridge.The turnpike was renewed in 1764 and ran until it was discontinued in 1871.
