- Brief Description:
- The Statue of 'King Billy', Market Place drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), 1886. The statue of King William III (1650-1702) was erected by public subscription in 1734 on the former site of the the town's bull ring. The statue, originally intended for Bristol, was by the Flemish sculptor Peter Scheemakers (1691-1781). Its composition was influenced by the Roman statue of Marcus Aurelius. The position of the statue of 'King Billy' in the middle of the street caused an obstruction to traffic. As can be seen in the drawing the tram lines had to detour around the statue and therefore the trams in Market Place ran along the only section of double track within the Old Town. Ink and wash on paper. Signed and dated bottom left corner.
