- Brief Description:
- Pen and ink drawing 'Royal Visit, Whitefriargate', by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), 1884. Central to the drawing is the re-constructed 'Beverley Gate', erected at the top of Whitefriargate for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh to Hull in October 1884. The gate was made of wood with the bottom part covered in branches of spruce. The gate had two towers and between them was a painted sign with 'Welcome' in pink on a white background. A Russian flag flies from the left tower. The Duchess of Edinburgh was Marie, daughter of Tsar Alexandra II. The royal couple were in Hull to lay the foundation stones at the Infirmary and to open a bazaar in aid of the Seamen's and General Orphan Asylum and were greeted by large crowds. Ink and wash on paper. Signed bottom left corner.
