- Brief Description:
- Drawing of Wilberforce House, High Street, Hull, by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), 1890. View of a two storey building with a garden in front. Two gentlemen stand on the pavement in front of the house in the right foreground. The seventeenth century house was rebuilt or remodeled in the late seventeenth century and again remodelled in the mid-eighteenth century by the Wilberforces. The Wilberforces were merchants and it is likely that the ground floor was used as offices with the family living above. The Abolitionist and MP William Wilberforce (1759-1833) was born in the house. The building was opened as a museum in 1906. Signed and dated bottom left corner. Ink and wash on paper. In mount.
