- Brief Description:
- Drawing of Wilberforce House on High Street, Hull, by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), 1900. A brick wall seperates the garden at the front from High Street, with a gate on the left. The seventeenth century house was rebuilt or remodeled in the late seventeenth century and again remodelled in the mid-eighteenth century by the Wilberforces. The Wilberforces were merchants and it is likely that the ground floor was used as offices with the family living above. The Abolitionist and MP William Wilberforce (1759-1833) was born in the house. The building was opened as a museum in 1906. Ink and wash on paper, signed and dated bottom left corner.
