- Brief Description:
- Pen and watercolour wash drawing entitled 'Gun Emplacement on a Fortified Island' by Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone (1900-1979), 1941. Soldiers manning a gun emplacement on a fortified island. A large camouflage green gun with barrell facing over a concrete structure, supports a balcony on which a soldier is looking through binoculars while another officer is climbing a stairway at the side from the enclosed level below, with a wall of sandbags beside it and enclosed space under the gun in which another soldier is working, with high concrete walls enclose the narrow pathway or trench leading up to the gun with steps and coloured iron doors into the wall on each side, probably leading to air raid shelters or ammunition stores behind each wall.
