Brief Description:
Photograph of the mock triumphal arch at the end of Whitefriargate in Hull, erected for the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales (the future King George V and Queen Mary) to Hull on 12th May 1903. The image shows the arch looking east towards Whitefriargate. It has been painted to simulate brickwork and has two crenellated towers, topped with flags. It is decorated with foliage, garlands and shields and has a sign on the portcullis which reads 'Welcome'. During the Royal visit the Prince and Princess opened the new City Square and unveiled the statue of Queen Victoria. The image has been mounted, as one of four, on a lined page from an exercise book.
