- Brief Description:
- Sketch of the ruins of Wressle Castle, East Yorskhire, by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), c 1895. View across fields with sheep and cattle to Wressle Castle in the background, partly hidden by trees. Wressle Castle is a ruined palace-fortress, first built by Thomas Percy in the 1390s. Srounded by formal gardens it was always intended as a high-status residence rather than a fortress. Partly demolished during the Civil war it was further damaged by fire in 1796. Pencil on paper.
