Allinson was a member of the London Group of artists, a large organisation formed in 1913, which included members of the former Camden Town Group. During his early career, Allinson came under the influence of a number of the Camden Town painters, many of whom are represented in this Gallery. He trained at the Slade School of Art under Wilson Steer (1860-1942), and went on to work under the guidance of the group's founding member Sickert (1860-1942). These artists combined decorative colour with realistic representations of everyday life in Camden Town. Although Allinson's painting shows a German scene, the subject matter of a music hall or theatre was a favourite of the Group's members. Allinson was best known as a landscapist, though he did not constrict himself to any one media or style. He earned his living as a sculptor, poster designer, caricaturist, theatre scenic designer and art master at Westminster School of Art. In 1918 he married and went to live in a small Swiss village where he painted alpine scenery, returning to London seven years later to continue to paint, etch and carved.
