Anderson, Eileen B.
Date/Period:
c1926
Museum link:
Ferens Art Gallery

Anderson was Art Master at Hymers College in Hull during the 1930s and '40s before moving to the South Coast. A member of Hull Art Club, she had an exhibition at the Ferens in 1948 where her work was upheld for its use of rich colours and imaginative subjects. Painted around 1926, Hilly Landscape shows the strong impact of French Post-Impressionism on English artists at that time. The heavy brushmarks, flat colour and bold use of line also reflect early experiments in abstraction. The artist seems less concerned with portraying a realistic scene and more pre-occupied with the painting as a flat, decorative surface.
