Brief Description:
Unframed oil painting mounted on board, of whaling ships in the arctic, 'SWAN', 'HARMONY' and 'VOLUNTEER'. 'SWAN' in full sail among ice floes and icebergs, with a bows view of the Swan showing the figurehead below the mizen mast, with whaleboats rowing to the ice shelves in the foreground one with harpooner at the prow over a spounting whale, also marked SWAN in the bow and stern. The HARMONY, HULL on the left with name marked across the transom below the stern windows; another ship at the far left with whale boats on the water, with crew cutting up a whale alongside the hull; and on the far right of the picture is the VOLUNTEER, HULL, seen from the stern with pennant and tricolor flying from the mast tops. Other whaling ships can be seen in the distance with icebergs and ice floes in the foreground with a polar bear on the left. The sky is pink on the horizon and blue above heavy storm clouds.
