Brief Description:
Oil on canvas of two icebound whalers with flensing and whale boats and crew spread out on the ice around them. To the right side there is a three quarter bows view of a three masted whaler with sails furled and a red pennant on the main mast, whale boats fixed at the deckside, a black hull with white gunwhale, and icebound in a ring of ice. On the left is another three masted whaler leaning over with portside uppermost, sails furled with Merchant Navy ensign at the stern mast with a whale boat fixed above the transom and saloon windows while one is falling from the deckside and others have been moored on the icebergs below. Crew members around the hull side are trying to pull the ship upright, and others unloading ship's chests onto the ice. A sailor is walking towards a polar bear in the right foreground with a gun pointing at it. Arctic mountains and icebergs can be seen on the horizon.
