Brief Description:
A newspaper cutting from the Eastern Morning News with an article by Alderman John Symons, M.R.I.A., entitled 'Wilberforce House / A Tale of Old Forgotten Far Off Things'. Alderman Symons had recently visited the house to see the progress being made to open it as a museum and notes that 'workmen were busily engaged painting, decorating, and renovating the massive staircase and splendid ornamental ceiling; also scraping the quaint, ancient, panel-cased rooms'. When completed and 'furnished with Hull relics of antiquity' it 'will be in every sense of the word the richest jewel in our ancient city'. The curator, Thomas Sheppard, gave him a tour around the building, noting where displays of whaling implements, portraits of William Wilberforce and 'hundreds of relics and curios' will be displayed. Alderman Symons then includes an 'authentic account of what took place' when Sir John Lister entertained King Charles I in the house. This is followed by details of William Wilberforce and the fight to abolitish the slave trade and notes on later residents of Wilberforce House. A drawing of the house, from High Street, illustrates the article.
