Brief Description:
Holy Trinity Church and the Market drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), about 1885. This view shows the west end of Holy Trinity church in the background with the area in front crowded with market stalls and shoppers. The lamp fixed to a pylon on the right is an electric arc light. Electric lighting was first used on the streets of Hull in 1882 but the carbon rods of the lamps wore out very quickly in 1884 the system was abandoned and street lighting became gas again. Ink and wash on paper.
