- Lowgate looking south from Hanover Square corner drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), about 1895. Streetscene showing Lowgate, with the entrance to Hanover Square on the right by the side of the Guildhall. On the opposite side of the road is the Odd Fellows Hall with J & J Saunders' drapers on the bottom floor. The Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows purchased this meeting hall in 1855. In the left foreground is the premises of ship's biscuit maker Borrill and Close. The street is busy with horse-drawn traffic and many pedestrians including a policeman. A man is up a ladder in front of the Golden Measure public house. The tower of St Mary's church is visible in the background. Ink and wash on paper. Signed bottom left corner.
