- Brief Description:
- The Sailors' Home, Salthouse Lane, drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), December 1889. Salthouse Lane was a main west-east route through the 19th century, connecting Lowgate with Drypool Bridge and East Hull. Drypool Bridge is visible in the background. On the right is the Sailor's Home, built in about 1780 with its grand porticoed entrance on Salthouse Lane. The building was used as a branch of the Bank of England until the mid 19th century, opening as the Sailor's Home in May 1860. It provided board, lodgings, recreational facilities and safe deposit provisions for visiting seamen. The premises of William Duffield Hardy's tailors stands in the left foreground. There are several pedestrians and a horse and cart in the street. Ink and wash on paper. Signed and dated bottom left.
