Brief Description:
The stableyard of the George and Dragon and Meggitt's Buildings, George Yard, drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), c 1900. Scene depicting a stableyard with galleried buildings on one side that have stables on the ground floor. There is a young girl holding a basket in the yard in the foreground. The George and Dragon, or George Inn, stood in George Yard, an alley that ran between Lowgate and High Street. The building was probably built in the 15th century and attached to one of the walls was a carved and gilded depiction of St George and the dragon. In the 19th century this area between Lowgate and the High Street was a maze of courts and alleys, filled with housing. Meggit's Buildings are on the left and appear to stabling or storage below with dwellings above, reached via stairs and a gallery. Ink and wash on paper. Signed bottom left corner.
