- Brief Description:
- The River Hull, looking south near Salthouse Lane Bridge, drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), about 1885. The River Hull between North Bridge and the river mouth was known as the Haven. Until the 18th century it was the only anchorage for ships in Hull, and as trade boomed and more vessels used the port, the Haven became increasingly congested. The construction of the the town docks partially relieved the crowding, but smaller ships continued to use the Haven. This drawing, looking from a viewpoint on the east bank of the river, shows the anchorage crowded with Humber keels, barges and, in the background, a smalll steamer. The entrance to the lockpit of Victoria Dock, opened in 1850, is shown on the left. Warehouse buildings line the banks of the river. Ink and wash on paper. Signed bottom left.
