- Brief Description:
- Carr Lane, Hull, sketched by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), about 1892. This shows Carr Lane from Chariot Street looking east towards St John's Street and the Wilberforce Monument. Smith has altered the perspective allowing him to give prominance to Barnett's jewellers shop, although this has made the sketched in horse-drawn carts and trams too small. Barney Barnett is lsted in the 1885 town directory as a pawnbroker at Nos 61-64 Carr Lane. By 1889, the probable date of this sketch, he is listed as a jeweller and by 1892 as a goldsmith. Wilberforce Monument and the Dock Offices building are visible in the background. There is a smaller sketch study of a shop front on the reverse. Pencil on paper.
