The North Bridge across the river hull shown here was opened in 1870 as a horizontal drawbridge with hydraulic lifting gear. To the right are the masts of a ship in the Dry Dock. 'Stephen's Union Warehouse' stands in the backround beyond the bridge. The row of buildings on the left include Wiltshire's Leather Merchants and Charles Curson's drapery shop. In between the two shops stands the 'Old Greenland Fishery' public house, named after the nearby whaling or 'GreenlandYards' in Wincolmlee. the distinctive tall building on the corner was owned Thomas Dale, wharfinger (harbourmaster). Ink and wash on paper. Signed bottom right corner.
