Brief Description:
Wooden single decker tram with carved decoration and letters 'RPC' carved on each external corner which are painted gold. Metal steps and semi-circular external guards at each end with the number '3' in gold and red paint. Each end is open with roof extension to form canopy. Has 'Ryde Pier Company IW' painted in gold circles on each side. Two entrances. Glass shaped windows curved at the top with flower pattern. Tyres are stamped 'G.Starbuck & Co / Birkenhead'. Internally it has a wooden plank flooring and wooden curved roof which is black on the outside and painted cream internally. Upholstered benches on each side. Was known as the 'Grapes Car' and was originally number '4'. Built in 1871, this is Britain's oldest surviving tramcar. It was built on Merseyside for the Ryde Pier Company on the Isle of Wight to transport ferry passengers 681m between the ferry terminal and the town of Ryde.
