Sailors sometimes gave hollow glass rolling pins to their loved ones as gifts when embarking on a voyage. These rolling pins were often hung on a string above the fireplace in the sailor's home. A popular superstition said that if the glass fell and broke the sailor would be lost at sea. This rolling pin is printed with pictures of ships and two love poems. The ships decorating the rolling pin are 'The Unfortunate' of London, 'The Great Australia Clippership' and 'The Truelove' of Hull. Because of its Romantic name, pictures of the Truelove were often used to decorate souvenir pottery and glass.
