Brief Description:
Anti Mill, with five sails, from Dansom Lane, drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), December1889. Streetscene that depicts Dansom Lane, East Hull, looking south, with St Mark's Street on the right and Wilde Street on the left. The view is dominated by a five sail windmill, the Anti Mill or Subscription Mill. There were originally three mills on Dansom Lane, this one built in 1801 and functioned as a co-operative milling venture to keep down corn prices. The tower of Dale's Flour Mill, built about 1803, is visible in the background. In the right foreground stands the premises of grocers Newton and Chapel. On the corner of St Mark's Street are hoardings advertising a 'Christams Treat' and 'P T Barnum's Greatest Show on Earth'.There are several figures and horse-drawn carts in the street. Ink and wash on paper. Signed and dated by the artist in the lower left corner.
