Brief Description:
Cottingham Drain, showing the bridge near Fountain Road, drawn by Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925), 1885. Two boys are fishing in the Cottingham Drain, whihc runs east towards the River Hull. Looking south from Ripon Grove has the houses of Richmond Terrace on the right, bisected by Waterlooo Street, marked by the drain bridge and the flagpole of the Burns Head public house. The large building at the end of the terrace was the former Ragged & Industrial School, built in 1856. On the left runs the terrace housing of Cottingham Place, bisected by Charles Street whichh ended at the bridge shwon in the centre. The chimneys and ventilator cowls min the left background mark the rear of Moors' & Robson's Crown Brewery, established in Raywell Street about 1848. Ink and wash on paper. The drawing is signed in the lower right corner.
