- Brief Description:
- 'At the Wintergarten, Berlin' by Adrian Paul Allinson (1890-1959), about 1913-1914. Modernist pre-War scene in at a Berlin cabaret theatre, the Wintergarten, with a group of bohemian figures seated in a theatre box around a table of drinks and bottles, with a pair of opera glass and a kid glove lying on the balcony front which is covered in deep red plush with a matching curtain at the side. A couple is seated either side of a theatrical young woman standing in a deep blue dress, with black stole and a large blue and black hat above her pale rouged face, holding a wine glass in one hand and a cigarette in the other, standing in front of a floodlit stage on which variety artists and dancers are performing, one is tightrope walking across it in leotard, ballet shoes and holding a large orange parasol behind her. A brightly coloured, mirrored backdrop can be seen with chair and table in front and dark shaded wings to the sides and orchestra pit in front. The overall effect is of strong colour contrasts and highly theatrical effects, reminiscent of the popular early music hall acts and extreme effects of the Ballet Russe. Oil on canvas.
