- Brief Description:
- 'Charles I Demanding Entrance at the Beverley Gate, Hull, April 23 1642' by George Arnald (1763-1841), 1819. Oil on canvas showing a group of mounted cavalry in Royalist costume with Charles I pointing at the gate of the keep to be granted entry to the town of Hull. The Royal militia party are gathered below a stone keep and portcullis gate within the city wall surrounding Hull, with a square church tower (Holy Trinity) and medieval rooftops beyond. There are figures on the battlements of the wall and keep tower, with one prominent figure at the left corner, leaning over to parley with the King on horseback below, surrounded by an armed guard holding pikes and Royal Standard banners and flags. They are on a country road outside the gate which is surrounded by uneven ground and a group of trees on the left, with dark storm clouds above the gateway.
