- Brief Description:
- 'The Swan and Isabella' by John Ward (1798-1849), about 1830. Two whalers the 'SWAN' and 'ISABELLA' in the Arctic, with Swan's figurehead clearly visible. Stern view of ISABELLA, HULL on transom. The Isabella is in a prominent position on the right with the Swan behind on the left, with a whaleboat harpooning a whale in the centre, surrounded by icebergs and walrus on ice floes in the foreground. Both ships have two crows nests on the main mast and pair of jaw bones are suspended against the fore and main masts of both, with a Union Jack flag flying from the foremast of the Isabella. The 'Swan' was originally a Royal Naval sloop, built at Plymouth in 1767 and entered the Hull whaling fleet in 1824, where she sailed under the command of Captain Dring. The 'Isabella' was launched on the River Hull in 1813 and purchased in 1824 by Thomas Carlill for the northern whale fishery and by 1833 was under the command of R Wallis Humphreys. Oil on canvas. Period cushion glazed frame with applied composition decoration and oil gilded finish.
