The Man with the Muck Rake, 1877 by Joseph Noel Paton (1821-1901) Description This ambitiously scaled, religious canvas was inspired by the popular Victorian text, 'The Pilgrims Progress' after which Paton painted a number of scenes. The Gallery has a small preparatory oil study for this work, as well as a further large scale oil painting by the artist. Work required The canvas needs cleaning and re-stretching to restore it to the artist's original intentions and remove disfiguring distortions that have developed over the years.
