The Birth of the Virgin

Icons such as this first appeared in Byzantium in early Christian times and became an integral part of the Byzantine church. Their origins can be traced back to Egyptian tomb portraits. They spread to Russia as Christianity spread. Artists were encouraged to record a wide range of biblical scenes, and icons became repositories of richly varied and detailed Bible stories. It has been suggested that this icon should be dates from the 19th century.
