Memento Mori

Memento Mori is one of only two paintings that can be positively attributed to Parkin. Whilst both works are signed, only the Ferens' is dated. The other work comes from the pulpit of St James' Church, Sutton-on-Hull, which sheds some light on the artists' clientele. Memento Mori is an emblematic work of the European tradition of Vanitas painting. Parkin has referred back to 15th century conventions, as contemporary 17th century Vanitas paintings tend to contain more symbols of memento mori, emphasising man's mortality. The skull is contained in a trompe l'oeil box. This is a rare surviving example of its kind from 18th century England.
