Stoneferry, Hull, with a sloop rigged keel

John WARD Hull 1798-1849 Stoneferry, Hull, with a sloop rigged keel In the tradition of Dutch 17th century cabinet pictures Ward has created a great feeling of breadth and space within a small area. The scene depicts a keel, seen from the stern, sailing on the River Hull at Stoneferry. The two five-sailed windmills were a special feature of the area. One of them certainly, and possibly the other, belonged to John and James Hewetson, manufacturers of whiting (ground chalk used in white-washing), oil and paint.
