Ships on the Humber and the South Blockhouse

This view looks west up the estuary of the Humber. Ward has created a tremendous feeling of distance by subtle use of the scale of the distant buildings and boats. At the time of the major Ward exhibition of 1981, Hull Museums' Keeper of Maritime History, Arthur Credland, suggested that this picture, along with two others of the same composition in the Maritime Museum, may well be the work of the Ward's pupil, William Frederick Settle (1821-1897).
