Ritual Hill Series No. 6

This is the nearest example the Gallery owns to 'Land Art', where the image is made with objects taken from the landscape itself. The discovery of the 'found objects' by the artist also gives the work an archaeological feel. Land Art, a comparatively recent development, is championed by the sculptor Richard Long (b.1945) whose walks around the world, recorded in maps and photographs, and during which he makes landscape artworks along the way, form an integral part of his work. Such developments, although diverse, are related to the landscape tradition properly established in Britain during the 18th century.
