Landscape with Waterfall

Wilson's compositions owe much to the influence of the classical landscape painter, Claude Lorraine (1600-82). The predominance of the skies in Wilson's work and the softness of the light are features reminiscent of 17th century Dutch landscapes, exemplified at the Ferens by the work of Jacob van Ruisdael (1628/9-1682). He applied these traditions in his own individual manner in views of the British landscape he loved. Wilson himself had many followers, who admired and copied his style. It has been suggested that this painting is by one of them, rather than by Wilson himself.
