Magnetic Field

Tunnard was the son of a sporting painter and country gentleman. During the 1920s he was a designer for a number of textile manufacturers and only became a painter in 1929. Tunnard was also active as a semi-professional jazz drummer which explains the musical overtones present in much of his work. Magnetic Field was painted after Tunnard's association with British Surrealism had ended. Here, the forms float, collide, overlap, interlock, and are irresistibly drawn to the centre of the images by some invisible force.
