The Hunchback Fiddler

The original from which this painting is copied seems to be lost, although the subject was engraved in 1792. Bega is now considered to be a relatively obscure Haarlem genre painter, but his work enjoyed great popularity in the 18th century when his fine brushwork and low-life subject matter were much appreciated. The Ferens copy is weak indeed without any of the detail visible in the engraving.
