Red Wall

Beech taught in the Fine Art department at Sheffield Polytechnic before moving to Hull in 1978 where he served as Head of Fine Art at Humberside College of Higher Education. Red Wall was acquired following an exhibition of Beech's work at the Ferens in 1984. His drawings and paintings at this time often used 'frottage' or rubbings, made from the surface of wood, stone or brick. He also used the shallow relief of gritstone crags and Assyrian relief's from the British Museum. His images concentrate on objects or surfaces, like a wall, where the illusion of space in the picture is very shallow. The combination of surface patterns and the cascades of light falling across the surface create a sense of visual mystery which is of particular interest to Beech.
