Amy, Wonderful Amy

Buxton trained as a tapestry weaver in the textile department of the Royal College of Art. This tapestry of Amy Johnson is one in a series of works celebrating Intrepid Women Travellers. As in most of her works, Buxton has drawn her inspiration from newspaper pictures and other popular images. Here, the image is taken from a famous photograph and includes a fragment of newspaper announcing her disappearance and a series of news-reel shots of her plane losing height on its fatal flight. Although the Ferens does not collect contemporary crafts, this tapestry was considered an unusual addition to the portrait collection.
