Gathering on the Terrace at 47, Downshire Hill, Hampstead

Richard Carline came from a family of accomplished artists. After studying in Paris and London he became an Official War Artist in 1918 and executed aerial views of the war zones. He shared his first exhibition with his brother Sidney (1888-1929) in 1920, the same year in which he joined the London Group, motivated, like his contemporaries, by a dislike of academic officialdom and new artistic movements like Futurism. Throughout the next 3 decades Carline remained very active, teaching, organising exhibitions and undertaking projects on behalf of the Artists' International Association. He continued this work well into the 1970s. His paintings included portraits and landscapes, the former often depicting his contemporaries and the latter reflecting both his native countryside and his travels abroad.
